Hard flooring is cut piece by piece, so unlike carpet you genuinely save material by cutting around obstacles. What you cannot skip is the waste factor, and it changes more than people expect with the pattern you choose.
Length times width at waist height, both dimensions taken at both ends so you catch out-of-square walls, then adjust for what is actually there.
Subtract chimney breasts, boxed pipework, and kitchen units that sit on the subfloor. Unlike carpet, you genuinely cut around these and the material saved is real.
Add alcoves, bays, and closets that are being floored. Also add the doorway thresholds, since flooring normally runs to the centre of the door opening.
Ask about kitchen islands and fitted units, because installs differ. Some run flooring underneath, some butt up to the plinth. It changes the quantity and only the fitter knows which is planned.
This is where flooring differs most from every other material, and where people under-order.
One that catches people: wide plank hardwood, meaning 7 inches or wider, commonly adds another 3 percent because the offcuts are too large to reuse elsewhere in the room.
A second order arrives from a different batch. Wood and tile vary between production runs, and a visible colour shift across a floor cannot be fixed without lifting it. Over-ordering costs you the price of a box you keep for future repairs. The asymmetry is why the industry builds in overage rather than measuring more precisely.
Direction affects both appearance and quantity, and it is a measuring question because it determines which room dimension the planks run along.
The usual convention is to run planks parallel to the longest wall, or toward the main light source, which makes the joints less visible. In a narrow room, running planks along the length makes the space read longer.
The practical measuring consequence is that the room dimension running across the plank direction determines how many rows you need, and whether the final row is a slim awkward sliver. If your last row works out under about two inches wide, most fitters will adjust the first row instead so both edges are balanced. That is worth knowing before you order, because it changes the count.
Two things that do not change your material quantity much but do change the fit.
Floating floors, meaning most laminate and LVP, need an expansion gap around the perimeter, typically a quarter to a half inch, hidden behind the skirting or a beading. That means the flooring is slightly smaller than the room, and it is not optional. Wood moves with humidity, and a floor laid tight to the walls buckles.
Transitions at doorways, where flooring meets a different material, need a threshold strip. Measure each doorway width so you can order the right lengths, and note which are internal and which lead to a different floor height.
Take a few readings of floor to ceiling height at different points in the room. If they differ noticeably, your floor is not level, and that matters for hard flooring in a way it does not for carpet.
Most manufacturers specify a flatness tolerance, and an out of level subfloor causes clicking, gapping and eventually joint failure on floating floors. Finding it before ordering means you can budget for levelling compound rather than discovering it mid-install.
