So buy for the longest shot you will actually take, then add margin. A 165 ft unit covers almost every indoor job including large open-plan rooms. Step outside to fences, driveways or roof runs and 300 ft becomes the sensible floor, with a green beam or a target plate if the far end is bright.
Accuracy matters less than people expect. Almost everything here is rated to plus or minus one sixteenth of an inch, which is finer than the tolerance of the job in front of you. Where accuracy claims do matter is at distance, and that is a different question from the headline number.

The human eye is roughly four times more sensitive to green light than to red at the same power. That is the whole argument, and it only matters when the dot is competing with something bright.
Indoors, red is fine and always has been. Every unit in the top four picks here is red, and none of the owner complaints about them concern visibility in a normal room. Green costs more, drains batteries faster, and buys you nothing you can see.
Outdoors the calculation flips. Owners of the budget red units describe the dot vanishing on a sunny driveway well before the rated range. Green pushes that boundary out, but it does not remove it. One owner of the green Huepar still could not hold a reading at 75 ft in full daylight. Green helps. It is not a fix.
The actual fix at long range is not beam colour at all. It is either a target plate, a cheap reflective card you prop at the far end so the tool has something bright to bounce off, or a camera viewfinder like the one on the GLM400CL, where you stop hunting for the dot and aim with a crosshair on screen instead.
Almost every laser measure sold claims plus or minus one sixteenth of an inch. Budget units claim it, Leica claims it, and the number is close to useless as a way of telling them apart.
It is a laboratory figure. It describes a single reading, taken indoors, against a flat matte target, perpendicular to the tool, at a moderate distance, by something that is not shaking. Change any one of those conditions and the real figure moves.
What actually separates an accurate tool from an inaccurate one in daily use is repeatability at awkward angles and at distance. That is where the price difference lives, and it is exactly what owner reviews expose. Budget units get described as loosening up at the far end of their range. Nobody says that about the Leica.
The practical test is free and takes a minute. Measure the same span five times, shifting your hand position slightly each time. A tool worth trusting returns the same number every time. One that returns a spread of a quarter inch is telling you something the box did not.
Price in this category does not buy accuracy. Every tier claims the same tolerance and, indoors, largely delivers it. What price buys is daylight performance, longevity, and the interface getting out of your way.
Real distance, area and volume modes, and accuracy that holds up in a room. What you give up is daylight visibility, a menu system that makes sense, and any expectation of years rather than months. The evidence base is enormous, so you know exactly what you are getting.
The value sweet spot. Either a name-brand red unit that survives a tool bag and reads clearly in a dim basement, or an unbranded green unit that works outdoors at moderate range. You rarely get both at this price, so pick the one your jobs need.
Instrument-grade consistency at awkward angles, Bluetooth that pushes readings into a floor plan app, and build quality with a decade of precedent behind it. Worth it when a wrong number costs you a re-measure or a client.
Four hundred feet, and more importantly a camera viewfinder so you can place the shot when the dot is invisible in sunlight. This is the only tier that genuinely solves outdoor long-range measuring rather than claiming it on the box.
The tool fires a pulse of laser light at a surface and times how long the reflection takes to return. Light travels at a known speed, so the round trip time gives the distance. Consumer units refine this with phase-shift measurement, comparing the outgoing and returning waveforms to resolve fractions of an inch rather than whole feet.
Two consequences follow, and both explain most of the frustration in owner reviews.
First, the tool needs light to come back. A dark, matte, angled or distant surface returns less, which is why readings fail against black asphalt, why glass gives nonsense, and why bright sunlight drowns the signal outdoors. Nothing is broken when this happens. There is simply not enough returning light to work with.
Second, the tool measures from a fixed point on its own body, and manufacturers do not agree on which point. Some measure from the front edge, some from the back. The GLM400CL defaults to the back, which several owners consider a design error, and the LEXIVON hybrid measures from behind its tape housing so it silently adds about three inches. Check which end yours uses before you trust a single number, because that offset does not average out.
This is not a replacement decision. Nearly everyone who buys a laser measure keeps a tape, and the reason shows up clearly in the reviews of the hybrid units.
Past about twenty five feet a tape stops being accurate. It sags under its own weight, twists, and needs a second person or a helper hook at the far end. Those errors run to inches, which dwarfs the sixteenth of an inch a laser argues about. For room diagonals, ceiling heights, fence lines and anything you cannot walk in a straight line, the laser wins outright.
Under a few feet the tape wins, and it is not close. A laser has to be located precisely against a reference surface, and it has no hook to catch an edge. One Huepar owner made exactly this point: accuracy was fine, but positioning it correctly was harder than just pulling a tape. For cutting a shelf or checking a cabinet gap, the tape is faster and more certain.
The honest division is that a laser measure handles distance and a tape handles detail. Buying a hybrid because you want both in one hand is reasonable, provided you accept a narrower, flimsier tape and a laser that will not survive being dropped.
Most bad readings are not faults. Five things cause nearly all of them, and four are free to fix.
You are not square to the surface. Measuring at an angle returns the hypotenuse, not the distance, and the tool cannot tell the difference. Over a long room a few degrees off adds real inches. Brace the unit against a flat reference rather than holding it freehand.
The target is too dark, too shiny or too far. Black asphalt absorbs the pulse, glass and polished tile bounce it away from the sensor, and sunlight swamps what does return. A white card propped at the far end fixes all three for a couple of dollars.
You are measuring from the wrong end. Front-edge and back-edge referencing produce a difference the length of the tool, every single time. Several units let you switch, and most people never look.
The batteries are low. Weak cells reduce pulse power before they trigger any warning, which shortens usable range and loosens repeatability. If a tool that was fine last month is now inconsistent, change the batteries before concluding anything else.
It genuinely needs calibration. This is the rare one. If the tool returns the same wrong number repeatedly against a known span, that is a calibration problem rather than technique, and most manufacturers document a reset procedure. Inconsistent numbers point at the four causes above instead.

How-to guidesOver a long span, yes. A tape sags, twists and needs a second pair of hands past about 25 ft, and those errors are far larger than the sixteenth of an inch a laser is rated to. Under a few feet the tape usually wins, because a laser has no hook to catch an edge and has to be located precisely against a reference surface.
They work, but the usable range collapses. Bright light washes out the returning dot, so a unit rated to 165 ft indoors may struggle past 60 to 80 ft on a sunny driveway. A green beam is roughly four times more visible to the eye than red, and a cheap target plate at the far end recovers most of the lost distance.
For rooms, square footage and most interior work, 100 to 165 ft is plenty. For roofs, fences, land and anything outdoors, start at 300 ft. Buying more range than you need costs money and adds nothing, because accuracy does not improve with the headline number.
Almost always technique rather than a fault. The four usual causes are measuring at an angle instead of square to the surface, a target that is too dark or too shiny to return the pulse, low batteries reducing pulse power before any warning appears, and the tool referencing from a different end than you assume. Consistent but wrong readings point at calibration. Inconsistent readings point at one of those four.
For indoor work, several are. The best selling budget model in this category carries over 22,000 owner ratings at 4.4 stars, a larger evidence base than any premium unit here. What you give up is daylight performance, an interface that makes sense, and any expectation of years rather than months. For occasional home use that trade is usually worth making.
Only if you work outdoors or in bright rooms. Indoors, red is perfectly visible and cheaper, and none of the complaints about the red units on this page concern indoor visibility. Green extends how far you can see the dot in daylight, but it does not eliminate the problem. A green unit rated to 395 ft still struggled at 75 ft in full sun according to one owner.
It calculates a distance you cannot shoot directly. Point at the top of a wall, then the bottom, and the tool solves the height using the two readings and the angle between them. It is how you measure ceiling height over a stairwell, or a roof edge from the ground, without a ladder.
Owner reports suggest a realistic split. Budget units are commonly described in months of regular use. Mid-priced brand-name units draw complaints around the two-year mark, usually displays rather than measurement. Premium instruments have owners describing a decade. If a tool is going on a jobsite daily, buy for the failure mode rather than the feature list.
