How We Choose and Test

We do not run a lab and we have not personally tested every laser measure on this site. Saying otherwise would be easy and dishonest. What we do instead is read owner reviews systematically, at volume, and remove products whose owners contradict their own listings. This page explains exactly how, and names every product the method has thrown out.

What we claim, and what we do not

We do not claim hands-on testing. No sentence on this site says we took a unit into a field and measured a fence with it. Where we describe how a tool behaves, that behaviour comes from people who own it, and we say so in the text. We think that is worth more than one person's afternoon with a sample unit anyway, because a thousand owners find failure modes that a reviewer never will.

The five steps

1. A product has to clear a threshold before we look at it

Minimum 3.5 stars overall, and enough ratings that the average means something. A four star product with eleven reviews tells you nothing. Where we do include something with a thin sample, such as a specialist unit with under a hundred ratings, we say so in the entry rather than letting the score stand unqualified.

2. We read the critical reviews, not the good ones

Five star reviews mostly tell you the parcel arrived. The information is in the one, two and three star reviews, sorted by what other buyers found helpful, because that is where people describe the specific thing that went wrong.

This is the step that produces almost everything original on this site. It is how we learned that Bosch screens fail around the two year mark, that DEWALT's Bluetooth does not connect for iPhone owners, that Leica's pairing has to be done inside the app rather than in your phone's Bluetooth settings, and that a lifetime warranty on one brand runs for twelve months.

3. We read the manufacturer's own specification text, not the title

Product titles are marketing. The bullet points underneath are often a different story, and comparing the two is unusually productive in this category.

Two examples. Leica sells the DISTO D1 under one listing titled 120 ft and another titled 130 ft, at the same price. Both listings state in their own specification text that the range is 40 m. It is one tool with two headlines. Separately, Klein is the only brand we have found that publishes accuracy in two tiers, tightening close and loosening at distance, which turns out to be a more honest description of how all of these instruments behave.

4. We check the claim against what owners measured

Where owners report actual numbers, those beat the specification. A unit claiming 165 ft whose owners get fifty feet in daylight is a fifty foot unit in daylight, and that is what we write.

The clearest single case: one owner measured over a hundred feet at night against a white reflective target, then found that in daylight, in shade, they would be lucky to get fifty. Same tool, same sensor. That one report reshaped how every range figure on this site is presented.

5. We drop what fails, and we say what we dropped

When the reviews contradict the listing badly enough, the product comes out, even when it is popular and even when it would have earned commission. The full list is below.

What gets a product removed

Four things, roughly in order of severity.

It does not measure repeatably. A loose tolerance gives you a slightly wrong number consistently. A unit that gives four different answers to the same stationary question is giving you no information at all, and that is disqualifying regardless of the badge.

What arrives is not what was advertised. Wrong market versions, displays that cannot switch to the units you work in, warranty refused because the unit came through an unofficial channel.

The headline claim is not survivable. A 500 ft rating on a unit with a real ceiling around eighty feet is not optimism, it is a different number.

A basic usability failure. No backlight on a tool bought for dark spaces. An interface owners cannot navigate after a month away from it.

Every product we have removed

Eight products have been cut from our guides after review reading. None of these are linked anywhere on this site.

Two of those are worth dwelling on. The LM50 has 6,762 ratings at 4.4, which makes it more popular than most of what we do recommend. The Makita carries a 4.6. Popularity is not the test. If the specific failure described is one that would cost you a job, the average does not rescue it.

Products we keep but flag

Removal is not the only outcome. Some products are worth buying with a warning attached, and those warnings appear on every page the product appears on rather than once.

The Leica Disto X3 is the clearest case. US buyers repeatedly receive model 850833, the international version, instead of the US 850834, and 850833 cannot display sixteenths of an inch. It remains one of our strongest recommendations and every single appearance carries the model number warning.

Similarly, the DEWALT DW099S is recommended for Android users and explicitly not recommended for its Bluetooth on iPhone. The CRAFTSMAN pocket unit is recommended with the finding that its lifetime warranty runs for one year.

What we do not do

We do not pad lists. Where we could only find six units that genuinely belong on a page, the page has six. Our DIY guide lost two products to the removals above and stayed at six rather than backfilling.

We do not write pages about products that do not exist. We had planned brand pages for seven manufacturers and dropped all seven after checking that they sell no laser distance meter in the US. Two comparison pages went the same way.

We do not rank by commission. Several pages here lead with the cheapest option on them, and one brand page carries no purchase link at all because we do not think anyone should buy that product online.

We do not claim precision we cannot source. Where a manufacturer does not publish a working range, our tables say not listed rather than filling in a plausible number. Stabila and two budget brands appear that way.

Corrections

If something here is wrong, we would rather know. Manufacturers change specifications, listings get updated, and a product that was fine last year can be a different unit under the same name today. Send us a correction and we will check it against the source and update the page.
