A rated range is measured indoors, against a matte target, in low light. Outdoors the surface you are aiming at is already flooded with light across the whole spectrum, including the wavelength the sensor is listening for. The returning pulse is still there. It is simply no longer distinguishable from the background.
The result is consistent across every price point. A budget unit rated to 165 ft is reported stopping around 100 ft. A green Huepar rated to 395 ft could not hold a reading at 75 ft in full sun. This is physics, not a defect, and no amount of paying more removes it entirely. The mechanism is explained here.
Two separate things fail outdoors: the sensor's ability to read the return, and your ability to see where the dot landed. The second fails first, and at long range it fails completely. That is why the ranking below is ordered by how you aim rather than by rated range.
Three approaches exist. A green beam is roughly four times more visible to the eye, which helps at moderate distance and runs out eventually. A target plate, a cheap reflective card at the far end, gives the beam something bright to bounce off and helps the sensor as well as your eye. A camera viewfinder removes the problem entirely: you aim with a crosshair on a screen and never look for the dot at all.
At genuine long range outdoors, only the third approach works reliably. That is the whole argument for the unit at number one.
This is the outdoor pick because of its camera, not its beam. At 400 ft in sunlight you will not see the red dot at all, so Bosch gives you a viewfinder and an on-screen crosshair instead of asking you to find it. That is the actual solution to the outdoor problem.
Right for: appraisers, estimators and roofers measuring long outdoor runs where a tape is not an option.

Check price on AmazonA reflective target plate costs a few dollars, usually has a magnetic back, and extends the usable range of every unit on this page. It gives the beam a bright surface to return from, which helps the sensor, and a high-contrast board to find, which helps your eye.
On a budget unit it is the difference between working and not. On a premium unit it is the difference between the rated range and something closer to it. It is the cheapest upgrade available in this category and almost nobody mentions it.
One unit listed at 500 ft was cut from this guide after reading its complaints. Owners report a real ceiling around 80 ft, inconsistent readings, and accuracy nowhere near its claimed figure. A second green unit was cut for errors of three quarters of an inch to a full inch across a 60 inch span.
That is why this list is six rather than eight. Recommending a 500 ft unit that manages 80 ft would be the exact failure this guide exists to warn about.
