Roofing asks three things of a tool that most guides never separate: it has to work in daylight, it has to calculate heights you cannot reach, and it has to survive being dropped off a ladder.

Most roof measuring is done from the ground, and everything you need from down there depends on an inclinometer.
Eave height and ridge height both come from indirect measurement: two readings and the angle between them. Roof pitch comes from the rise and run those give you. And pitch is the number that converts your footprint into actual roof area, which is the whole calculation. Get it wrong and you under-order by 5 to 25 percent depending on the slope. So a unit without an angle sensor cannot do the job from the ground, whatever its range. Every product below has one, which is why this list is six rather than eight.
A drifted inclinometer is the nasty failure here, because distance readings stay perfect while every height and pitch calculation is quietly wrong. Bosch quotes levelling accuracy of plus or minus 0.2 degrees on Blaze units. Check yours against a spirit level. Tilt calibration is covered here.
Three conditions make this the hardest environment for these tools. You are outdoors in daylight, so the dot is hard to see. You are aiming at a roof, which may be dark asphalt that absorbs the beam or bright metal that deflects it. And you are working near ladders and edges, so the tool gets dropped.
That last one is worth taking seriously. One Hilti owner reported their unit breaking two months in from a slight fall, noting that on a construction site things always fall. Ruggedness is a specification here, not a nicety.

Check price on AmazonEvery tool on this page exists so you can measure from the ground. Roof work is among the most common causes of serious injury in construction, and a measurement is never a reason to take a risk you would not otherwise take.
If the roof is steep, wet, frosted or brittle, or you do not have proper fall protection, measure from below and accept a slightly less precise number. The ground-based method is here and it is accurate enough to order material from.
A Hilti unit was removed from this guide after reading its reviews. Owners report it displays only in metres with no way to change it, confirmed by a Hilti store, and that units sold through this channel are grey imports that Hilti declined to warranty. For US roofing work that is unusable.
A budget unit listed at 500 ft was also cut, after owners reported a real ceiling around 80 ft.
