This is the whole US Amazon range as we find it. If DEWALT adds models we will add them here.
The DW099S is a competent 100 ft laser measure. Owners describe it as fast, accurate and built with the heft they expect from the brand, and 625 ratings at 4.4 is a real record rather than a handful of opinions.
The reason it does not top our guides is specific and it is not about the laser. It is about the Bluetooth, and specifically about which phone you carry.
This is the single most important thing on this page. Multiple iPhone owners report that the DW099S will not connect at all, and have returned the tool over exactly that. One described it as a great standalone measuring device, fast and accurate with the durability they expect, then gave it two stars and sent it back because the main selling point was unusable on their phone. If you are on iPhone, buy this for the measuring and treat the app as though it does not exist.
Short measurements can be slow. One owner found that measurements at close range take ten to twenty seconds to register. On a job where you are taking one measurement that is nothing. On a job where you are taking forty it is most of an hour.
Long shots and sunlight are difficult. The same owner noted problems on long measurements and in the sun. That is not specific to DEWALT, it is what a red beam does, and it applies to almost every unit at this price. It does mean the DW099S is an indoor tool.
There is also a warranty account worth reading with the same weight you would give any single report. One owner wrote that a more expensive DEWALT laser measure they had previously owned developed problems within a year, and that DEWALT did not accept the complaint. That is one person's experience rather than a pattern, but it is the only warranty account of its kind in the DEWALT reviews we read and it is fair to note it.
Brand consistency is a real benefit for cordless tools, where batteries and chargers are shared. A laser measure shares nothing. It takes AAA cells, it has no platform, and standardising on yellow buys you nothing except that it is easy to find in a bag.
So the honest answer is that if you carry Android, the DW099S is a perfectly good choice and the brand match is a pleasant extra. If you carry an iPhone, the main feature you are paying extra for is the one that does not work, and you would be better served by a unit chosen on its merits.
Well built, quick and accurate as a measuring tool. Recommended for Android carrying crews already standardised on DEWALT, and not recommended for its connectivity if you use an iPhone.
Right for: interior work on a site where the rest of the bag is yellow and the phone is Android.

Check price on AmazonIf you want the connectivity to work on any phone. Leica's app is the one that owners consistently do not complain about, and the DISTO D1 is the cheap way into it. The Bluetooth guide ranks every connected unit on the software rather than the range, which is the only ranking that matters once you have decided you want an app.
If you want more range for the same money. The DW099S stops at 100 ft. Several units at similar prices go three to six times further, though rated range and usable range are not the same number outdoors. That gap is the subject of the long range guide.
If the tool is going to get dropped. Nothing DEWALT sells here is sealed or drop rated, despite the reputation the brand has for exactly that. The contractors guide ranks on what survives rather than on what measures.
If you just want the best value indoors. A Bosch GLM100-23 covers the same 100 ft, shows sixteenths, has four times the review count and costs less. The full Bosch range is compared here.
Whatever you end up with, check it against a known length. Five minutes now is cheaper than finding out on a cut.
