Both listings carry the identical title, Klein Tools Laser Distance Measure, Measures in Feet, Inches, Meters. The colour and the price are the fastest way to tell them apart.
Deal with this before anything else. Klein's two laser measures are sold under exactly the same product title. Nothing in the headline distinguishes a hundred foot red beam unit from a two hundred foot green beam one at two and a half times the price.
What separates them is the colour of the body and the specification bullets. The cheaper one is black and reads to 100 ft. The dearer one is orange, reads to 200 ft, is rechargeable, has a green beam and adds area, perimeter, volume and indirect measurement.
If you are buying from a search results page rather than reading the bullets, it is very easy to order the wrong one. Check the colour in the photograph.
Every other manufacturer we cover quotes a single tolerance. Bosch says plus or minus 1/16 in. Leica says plus or minus 1 mm or 2 mm depending on the model. One number, applied to the whole range of the instrument.
Klein does not do that. Klein says plus or minus 1/16 in for roughly the first thirty feet, and plus or minus 1/8 in beyond that, out to the maximum range.
Read quickly, that looks like Klein admitting to a worse tool. It is worth sitting with the alternative reading, which is that every laser measure behaves this way and Klein is the only one printing it.
The physics supports the second interpretation. A laser distance meter works on the strength and timing of a returning signal. The further away the target, the weaker the return and the more the beam has spread, so precision degrades with distance in every one of these instruments regardless of what the box says. A single figure quoted for a 165 ft tool is describing favourable conditions, and our own review reading is full of owners discovering that at the long end.
Do not compare Klein's 1/8 in against Bosch's 1/16 in and conclude Klein is half as good. You are comparing a figure quoted at 100 ft against a figure quoted under favourable conditions. Compare the tiers that describe the same job instead. Inside thirty feet, which is most rooms, Klein quotes exactly the same 1/16 in that Bosch does. Beyond thirty feet, Klein tells you it loosens and Bosch does not.
The hundred foot unit is a room tool. Almost every measurement in a house is inside thirty feet, which is the tier where it holds a sixteenth. Used that way, at its price, it is a strong buy and its 1,120 ratings at 4.5 support that.
The two hundred foot unit is doing something different. It has a green beam, which is several times easier to see, and the calculation modes to work out floor areas and duct volumes. Its accuracy tier boundary is in the same place, so past thirty three feet you are working to an eighth of an inch, which is fine for estimating volume and not fine for cutting timber.
That is a coherent design. It is a tool for surveying spaces rather than for setting out joinery, and Klein's own customer base of electricians and mechanical trades is exactly who that suits.
Neither listing states whether the display shows fractional inches or decimals. The accuracy claims are quoted in fractions, which is suggestive but not the same thing as a display specification.

Inside thirty feet this quotes the same sixteenth of an inch as tools costing three times more, and almost every measurement in a house is inside thirty feet. A pocket clip and one button operation finish the argument.

Check price on AmazonBuy the black hundred foot unit unless you have a specific reason not to. It is the one with the review record, it holds a sixteenth across the distances you actually measure, and it costs a fraction of the alternative.
Buy the orange two hundred foot unit if you keep losing the dot, or if you are calculating volumes rather than lengths. Green beam and the calculation modes are what you are paying for, not the extra range.
If you need a tight tolerance at distance, neither Klein applies. Both loosen to an eighth of an inch past about thirty feet, and if you are working long and need precision that is a Leica conversation.
If you measure outdoors, the green unit helps and does not solve it. In direct sun you need an aiming aid rather than a brighter dot, and the outdoor guide ranks on exactly that.
If you want an app, Klein does not offer one on either unit. Connected options are compared here, ranked on the software rather than the range, because the software is what fails.
And whichever you buy, check it against a known length first. With a two tier specification it is worth checking at both a short distance and a long one, because those are two different claims.
