A residential appraiser uses this daily and calls it extremely accurate and reliable. A different owner bought three separate units and found every one of them reading outside the advertised tolerance. Both of those are true, and which one applies to you depends entirely on what you do with the number.

This is the most methodical piece of owner testing we have found on any product on this site, and it deserves setting out properly.
One owner wanted to like this unit, having chosen it for its size, price, features and the brand. They found the one they received was off by 0.1 inches at every distance they tested. That is roughly 1.6 times the advertised sixteenth of an inch.
Assuming a faulty unit, they bought a second. It was also off by precisely 0.1 inches. They then bought a third, which was off by about 0.07 inches. Still outside the stated tolerance.
Their own conclusion was measured rather than angry: still adequate for many uses, especially estimates and construction, but not good enough for trim carpentry or anything needing greater accuracy.
Notice what makes this survivable. The offset was the same at every distance and nearly the same across three units. That is a calibration offset, not random scatter, and a consistent offset is something you can measure once and allow for permanently. Random variation is the failure that cannot be worked around, and it is why we removed other products entirely. Measure a known length on day one, note the difference, and you have a tool you can trust for the rest of its life. The procedure takes five minutes.
Set the two accounts side by side and there is no contradiction.

Appraisal work reports floor areas. A tenth of an inch on a wall length disappears entirely by the time it reaches a square footage figure.
Trim carpentry is the opposite. A tenth of an inch is a visible gap at a mitre. That owner was right to reject it for their work and right to keep it for estimating.
So the question is not whether this tool is accurate. It is whether your work can absorb a tenth of an inch. For most people measuring rooms, planning furniture, estimating materials or producing floor areas, the answer is comfortably yes.
The most upvoted positive review comes from someone who bought a house and needed room dimensions before moving in, to work out furniture placement. Their observation is one we have now seen on several products: you cannot rely fully on listing measurements. What they valued was getting accurate numbers without having to shift the previous owner's furniture around, and avoiding the awkwardness of trying to.
That is a real job that a tape measure does badly and this does well, and it has nothing to do with tolerance.
The appraiser use case above is the professional version of the same thing: speed across large rooms, alone.
Outdoors. This is a red beam unit and the reports are blunt about it. One owner summarised it as working pretty good indoors and not so good in daylight. Another said it works well and feels like a quality product, especially indoors where the laser is clearly visible and accurate, with the implication clear about outside.
That is not a defect. It is what red diodes do, and it applies to almost every unit at this price. If any part of your work happens outside, this is the wrong Bosch. The explanation of why is here, and it is worth understanding before you spend more on a bigger range figure that will not help.
These two are the obvious pair in Bosch's range and the difference is smaller than the price gap suggests.
The 165-40 gives you 65 ft more range, more modes, memory and real-time measurement, plus by far the largest review base of any laser measure we cover at 5,846 ratings. The 100-23 gives you the same tolerance, the same fractional display and the same colour screen for less.
Indoors, a hundred feet covers essentially every room and hallway in a house. If you are not going to use the extra modes, the cheaper unit is the better buy and the money is better spent on a second tool or on green.
