Every rated range you have ever read assumes an indoor target. Step outside and two separate things start to fail: the sensor's ability to read the return, and your ability to see where the dot landed. The second one fails first, and almost every buying guide gets that backwards.

When a listing says 165 ft, that figure was arrived at pointing the tool at a cooperative target in low ambient light. It is not dishonest, it is simply the condition under which these instruments are characterised. It is also nothing like a driveway at midday.
The gap shows up clearly in owner reports. One person with a 165 ft budget unit measured over a hundred feet at night against a white reflective object, then found that in daylight, in shade, they would be lucky to get fifty. Same tool, same target material, same sensor. The only variable was the light falling on the target.
Across the budget units we have read, a consistent pattern emerges: tools claiming anywhere from 165 ft to 500 ft tend to deliver somewhere around eighty to a hundred feet once you are outside in daylight, and considerably less in direct sun.
The sensor has to detect a returning signal strong enough to time. That is the range problem, and it is what manufacturers optimise. Separately, you have to know the dot landed where you intended. That is the aiming problem, and nothing about a bigger range figure helps it. Outdoors the aiming problem arrives long before the sensor gives up, which is why a 400 ft unit with a camera beats a 656 ft unit without one at any real distance.
The instinct is to buy a stronger or greener beam. It does not work, and the reason is worth understanding because it saves money.
Your dot is under a milliwatt. The sunlight already landing on that wall contains every wavelength your dot is made of, at vastly higher intensity. You are trying to spot a small addition to an already flooded surface. Green helps because your eye is more sensitive to it, and in shade or overcast conditions that can be the difference. In direct sun it is not enough, and owners of green units say so.
One Bosch owner measured their red unit as usable to about three feet in direct sunlight, then took the same tool indoors, checked it against two tape measures, and found no variance at all up to eight feet. Nothing was wrong with the instrument.
Indoors there is always a wall. Outdoors there frequently is not.
Measuring across open ground, to a property line, or to a point in a field means the beam has nothing to return from. The tool will simply fail to read, and no amount of range solves it because range assumes a target exists.
This is where a target plate stops being a nice extra and becomes the tool that makes the job possible. It is a small reflective card, usually magnetic, that you place at the far point. It gives the beam a bright cooperative surface and gives you something visible to aim at. It costs a few dollars, it improves every unit on this site, and it is mentioned almost nowhere.
Indoors, over fifteen feet, a small angular wobble moves the dot barely at all. At two hundred feet the same wobble moves it several feet across the target, and you may be measuring something entirely different from what you meant.
This is why tripod threads exist on the better units and why owners of long range tools keep mentioning bracing. One owner of a short range unit wondered whether they needed a pole. At the distances outdoor work involves, the answer is usually yes, or at least a wall to rest against.
Brace the tool. Free. A fence post, a car roof, a wall. Removes most of the shake error.
Buy a target plate. A few dollars, and the single highest value purchase in this whole category for outdoor work.
Measure at dawn, dusk or in shade. Free, and genuinely effective. Ambient light is the variable, so change it.
Buy a green beam. Helps in overcast and shade. Does not rescue direct sun. The full green against red comparison is here.

That is not a rule of physics, it is what the owner reports consistently describe, and it will keep you from buying a 656 ft unit expecting to measure a field with it.
Then ask the question the listing does not answer: how am I supposed to see where the dot went. If the answer is with my eyes, the tool is an indoor tool regardless of what it claims. If the answer is on a screen, you are looking at something that genuinely works outside.
If your work is split between the two, buy for the outdoor case. A camera unit works perfectly well indoors. An indoor unit does not work at all outdoors.
