One owner framed an entire tiny home with this, using it for ninety per cent of their cuts. Another says it cannot show sixteenths of an inch and calls that a major oversight. Both are right, and the tension between them is the whole review.

The sensor is not the problem and 6,287 ratings at 4.4 say so. What holds it back is the display, which gives you whole inches and decimals rather than sixteenths, so every measurement destined for a saw needs converting in your head.

The most useful positive review on this listing comes from a first time builder constructing a tiny home in their back garden. They used it for ninety per cent of their framing measurements, said it let them know exactly what dimensions their cuts had to be, and finished the frame start to finish with it.
That is a serious endorsement for a twenty dollar tool and it deserves to be taken at face value. The sensor works. Somebody built a structure on its numbers.
They added one caveat, which is that it goes through AAA batteries if you use it that intensively. Worth knowing if you are planning a project rather than taking the occasional measurement.
Another owner spelled out the display problem precisely. It measures in inches, but whole inches, and while it does fractional inches it gives them as decimals. Their point was that converting a decimal to the standard sixteenth is not something you can do usefully with one hand occupied, and that you would need a spare hand for a calculator. They called it a major oversight. On a tool where the tolerance is a sixteenth of an inch, not being able to display a sixteenth of an inch is a real limitation.
One owner planning a remodel raised something we have not seen on any other product. They wished the base and sides were flat, or that there were bubble levels on two sides, because the slight curve on the base can throw a measurement off.
This matters more than it sounds. A laser measures from a face of its own body, so that face needs to sit flat against your reference surface. If the base rocks slightly, the tool is not square to what you are measuring, and at distance a small angular error becomes a large linear one. It is a design detail that costs nothing to fix and is not mentioned anywhere in the listing.
The practical workaround is to brace it against an edge rather than resting it on the curve, and to take the reading twice.
One owner tested this carefully enough to be worth reporting in full. At night, against a white reflective object, they got a reading over a hundred feet. In daylight, in shade, they judged they would be lucky to get fifty. Indoors, they measured fifty feet and found it read as expected.

A recurring note is that this is not intuitive. One owner read the manual, got it working, put it away for a month, and had to read the manual again, because the icons do not mean what icons usually mean.
For a tool used four or five times a year, that is a genuine cost. It is also the argument for buying something with fewer functions rather than more, which runs against how these are marketed.
It needs a case and does not come with one. One owner put it plainly: works great, but you will be dropping it a lot.
The price has moved. A recent reviewer noted it was great at the previous price and is a little pricey now. Part of the case for this tool has always been that it cost about a fifth of a Bosch, so check where it currently sits before deciding.
Anyone measuring to estimate rather than to cut. Room sizing, remodel planning, working out how much paint or flooring, checking whether furniture fits. For those jobs the decimal display is irrelevant and the tool is very good value.
Anyone whose measurement ends at a saw. You will be converting decimals to sixteenths on every cut, and that conversion is where mistakes come from, not the tolerance of the tool. Round 8.47 ft to eight foot six in your head and you have introduced half an inch, roughly eight times the accuracy you paid for.
If your measurements end in a cut. The Bosch GLM100-23 displays sixteenths natively and holds plus or minus 1/16 in, which means the number on the screen is the number you mark. Whichever you choose, check it against a known length first, and on this one check it with the base flat and then braced against an edge, to see whether the curve is affecting your readings.
