Green is genuinely easier to see and it is worth paying for in the right conditions. What it will not do is the thing most people buy it for, which is let you measure outdoors in bright sunlight. That is a different problem with a different fix.

It is not brighter. Both beams in these tools are Class II, under a milliwatt. The difference is in your eye rather than in the laser.
Human daylight vision peaks in the green part of the spectrum, around 555 nanometres. The red diodes used in measuring tools sit far out towards the end of the visible range, where the eye is considerably less sensitive. Two dots putting out identical power land on your retina with very different effect.
Klein states the difference as green being twice as visible as a standard red laser on its own product listing. Other manufacturers claim more. Rather than pick a number, the useful way to think about it is that green buys you a real and noticeable advantage in the conditions where you were struggling, and no advantage at all in the conditions where you were not.
In direct sunlight the problem is not that your dot is dim. It is that the surface you are aiming at is already flooded with light containing every wavelength your dot is made of. A green dot on a sunlit wall at eighty feet is as invisible as a red one. Buying green to measure a driveway is the most common mistake in this category, and the fix is a camera viewfinder or a target plate, not a different colour.
The reviews we read line up with the table above rather than with the marketing.
On red units, the daylight complaints are unambiguous. One Bosch GLM165-22 owner found the dot usable to about three feet in direct sunlight, then took the same tool indoors, checked it against two tape measures and found no variance at all up to eight feet. The sensor was never the problem. A RockSeed owner described their red dot as very hard to see outside. A DTAPE owner found theirs unusable past about sixteen feet outdoors in shade, while working fine indoors on white walls to around thirty two feet.
One report is particularly clarifying. An Ogeto owner measured over a hundred feet at night against a white reflective object, then found that in daylight, in shade, they would be lucky to get fifty. Same tool, same sensor, same target material. The variable was ambient light.
On green units, the complaints are different. Owners praise the visibility and then mention battery life, because a green diode draws more current than a red one. That is the trade, and it is a fair one if visibility is what was stopping you.
Three situations make it clearly worth the premium.
You keep losing the dot on dark surfaces. Navy feature walls, dark timber, charcoal tiling, black cabinetry. Green shows up on all of them where red disappears.
You work in large or badly lit interiors. Warehouses, unfinished basements, lofts, new builds without power. The distance and the low ambient light both work in green's favour.
Your eyes find red difficult. This one comes up more than you would expect. One Bosch buyer exchanged a camera equipped unit for a green beam model without the camera, saying plainly that they could not see well and the green worked better for their needs, and that it cost less. That is a completely rational trade.
If your measuring happens in normally lit rooms with pale walls, which describes most homes and most offices, red is fine and the money is better spent on a tool that shows sixteenths of an inch or one with a better display.

A target plate. A few dollars. A magnetic reflective card you place at the far end and aim at. It gives the beam a bright cooperative surface to return from and gives you something to aim at that you can see. It improves every unit on this site, red or green, and almost nobody mentions it.
A green beam. Helps in shade and overcast conditions. Does not rescue direct sun.
A camera viewfinder. This is the actual solution. Units like the Bosch GLM400CL and the Leica D5 show you a magnified image of where the beam landed with a crosshair on the screen, so you stop needing to see the dot with your eyes at all. Do not buy green to solve sunlight. Nothing at this price solves sunlight with a brighter dot, because the problem is the light already on the wall rather than the light you are adding to it.
And whichever colour you choose, buy a target plate. It costs a few dollars, it fits in the same pocket, and it does more for a difficult measurement than the beam colour does.
One more thing worth knowing about beam colour and accuracy: they are unrelated. A green unit is not more precise than a red one from the same maker. If tolerance is what you are shopping for, that is a separate question and the answer has nothing to do with what colour the dot is.
