LM50 165ft Laser Measure Review: Why We Do Not Recommend It

This is the most popular product we advise against, with 6,762 ratings at 4.4, and plenty of owners who are genuinely pleased with it. It is also the tool where one owner watched their cuts get steadily worse, checked it, found it consistently off, and could find no way to correct it and no instructions anywhere.

Verdict

Fine for rough measuring. Not for anything you are going to cut, and no purchase link on this page.

Popularity is not the test. Two separate owners describe a consistent error they could not correct, one of them only discovering it after repeated cuts came out wrong. That is the failure mode we treat most seriously, because you trust it until you do not.

The report that decided it

One owner explained they already had a Bosch laser measure but found it drained batteries within weeks unless the cells were removed, so they bought this cheaper unit instead.

What followed is the part that matters. Their measurements on cuts kept getting worse and worse, and they kept having to make multiple cuts to get a piece right. Eventually they checked the tool properly and found it was definitely off, and not by a small amount. They could not find a way to correct it, could not find the instructions, and could not find them anywhere online either. They went back to the Bosch.

A second owner, writing in Spanish, described the same shape of problem more precisely: the unit always measures two millimetres over, and reconfiguring it simply produces the same result at the next measurement.

Why this failure is worse than being inaccurate

Notice how the first owner found out. Not by testing the tool, but by watching their work go wrong repeatedly and eventually suspecting the measurement. That is the expensive way to discover an error.

We recommend a Bosch on this site where an owner found three units all reading about a tenth of an inch out, because that error was consistent and, crucially, they measured it. A known offset is something you correct once and forget. An unknown offset in a tool you trust is timber, tile and time.

In fairness, the owners who like it

With 6,762 ratings this is one of the most bought laser measures on Amazon, and the positive reviews are specific and reasonable.

One bought it for a garage organisation project, to work out exactly how much pallet racking would fit. Their point was practical: measuring garage widths and depths singlehandedly across shelves and bins is a struggle, and the alternative was emptying the garage, measuring, and putting everything back. The tool solved that. Their summary was that it is accurate and easy to use for basic measurement, and that you will need the manual for the complex functions.

Another had an unusual requirement, measuring a twelve foot diameter hand dug well through a two inch hole in a solid cover, and found it did the job.

Both of those are estimating tasks, where being a couple of millimetres out changes nothing. That is the honest use case for this tool and it is a real one.

So what is our actual position

If you want something to tell you roughly how big a space is, this works and thousands of people are content with it.

If your measurement ends at a saw, a tile cutter or an order form, we would not send you here, because two owners describe a consistent error with no way to fix it and one of them found out the hard way. At this price there are alternatives with better records and, more importantly, with errors that are either absent or correctable.

We also note that the specification text on this listing is near identical in structure to the LM100, another unit we do not recommend, and to the Laselion LT100, where an owner measured error growing from 2 mm close up to over 25 mm at sixteen feet. We cannot confirm any shared manufacturing and we are not asserting it. We can say we have now examined three similarly presented budget units and found documented accuracy problems on all three.

If you already own one

Do not assume yours is affected, and do not throw it away.

Check it against a tape at three distances, say five feet, ten feet and twenty feet. If the error is the same at all three, you have a correctable offset: note it, apply it, and the tool is perfectly usable. If the error changes with distance, or if it is large, keep it for estimating and use something else for anything that gets cut. The procedure takes five minutes.

What to buy instead

At about the same price. The RockSeed two pack carries 22,354 ratings, owners have checked it against tapes at close and long range, and you get a spare unit.

If the battery drain was why you left Bosch. That is a real and fixable problem. Take the cells out when a tool is going in a drawer for a season. It costs nothing and it is the single cheapest habit in this category.

If your measurements end in a cut. The Bosch GLM100-23 displays sixteenths of an inch natively, and where owners have found it out of tolerance the error was consistent and therefore correctable.
