We want to lead with this, because a page arguing against a well rated product owes the other side a fair hearing.
One owner uses it daily on commercial measuring and calls it easy to use. Another says it takes half the time an estimate would otherwise take. A third, while noting it costs more than competitors, says the thing is pretty much completely accurate and describes it as a game changer for doing quotes.
An Italian owner covers the build: like all Makita products it is well made and solid, small and manageable, sitting comfortably in the palm of one hand, and it comes with a small Makita pouch to protect it from knocks.
None of that is in dispute. If you own one and it works for you, nothing on this page suggests otherwise.
The display is not illuminated. One owner reported that they could not read it in some areas and had to move to somewhere with more light to take a reading.
Think about where a laser measure earns its money: basements, lofts, crawl spaces, unwired new builds, plant rooms, behind furniture, at dusk. Those are exactly the places a tape measure is awkward and a laser is quick, and they are also the places you cannot read an unlit screen. Every competing unit at this price has a backlight and most now have colour. It is the single most visible way this design shows its age.
One owner who had previously owned a Bosch, and lost it to a washing machine, was blunt about the replacement. They found this bigger, noted the missing backlight, and then raised something specific: it only measures in sixteenths, so for anything critical it is hit or miss.
That is worth unpacking, because on most of this site we treat sixteenths as the thing to want. For framing, tiling, flooring and estimating, a display in sixteenths of an inch is exactly right, and plenty of budget units fail by offering only decimals.
What this owner is describing is the opposite limit. If your work needs finer than a sixteenth, this tool cannot show it to you, and you would be looking at Leica's X3 or D5 which hold roughly a millimetre. It is a fair criticism from someone doing critical work, and it does not apply to most buyers.
One owner, also comparing against a Bosch they had lost, described the beam as not pointing exactly where it should, almost as though it were at an angle. They had to constantly adjust the bottom of the unit to get the dot to land where it needed to, and said that afterwards they did not have much confidence in the accuracy.
They were careful to say they did not know whether their particular unit was defective, and we would treat it the same way. It is one account against 597 ratings. It is also the kind of fault that would be easy to miss until you compared the tool against something you trust, which is the argument for doing that check in week one.
To be precise about what happened. This unit was slotted into our guide to the most accurate laser measures, a page whose entire ranking axis is how tightly a tool holds a measurement.
The backlight omission and the alignment report together made that placement impossible to defend, and once it came out of the accuracy guide there was nowhere else it fit. It is a 164 ft red beam unit, so it is an indoor tool, and indoor tools live in exactly the low light conditions where the missing backlight bites.
That is the whole reasoning. It is not a claim that the tool is bad, and the review record says it plainly is not.
Anyone standardised on Makita who works in well lit finished spaces and wants a solid, simple tool with a decent pouch. The daily commercial user quoted above is doing exactly that and is happy.
It is worth saying that brand matching buys you nothing here. A laser measure shares no battery, charger or platform with your cordless tools. The only benefit of matching colours is spotting it in a bag.
Anyone working in basements, lofts, crawl spaces or unlit new builds. Anyone who needs finer than a sixteenth of an inch. And anyone who would rather have a colour display and a larger evidence base for less money.
